This book is a retrospective look by Stephen Smith of what NYC Health was like prior to the founding of APHA in 1872 begins with the recounting of the appalling health conditions of New York City in 1866, documents the struggle for meaningful sanitary health reforms, the establishment of the Metropolitan Board of Health and reviews the notable accomplishments but unfinished work from the view of New York City some 40 years later. The book was published in 1911.It is truly a “must read” whose lessons will resonate with us today. It was published in 1911.
